Lips Go Dark Again. Daddy Likey
April 5th, 2013
Don't get me wrong. I've enjoyed the ride with The Flaming Lips the past 15 or so years. The shows have been uplifting, the music dreamy and carefully conceived. I try not to be a cranky old fart about such things. Bands should be allowed to evolve as long as they're doing it from a place of honesty.
That said I miss what they were. A loud, psychedelic roar of guitars. Damn they were great. I saw them at the old Staches once where the only special effect was a piece of plywood with hundreds of Christmas lights shoved through some holes, and perhaps a cheap smoke machine. I saw them on the side stage at Lollapalooza a year before when they ripped through a stunning cover of the Queen/Bowie classic "Under Pressure." Below is a set from the same tour, likely within days either way of when I saw them.
Anyway I just caught their Letterman appearance of earlier this week, and some old feelings were awakened. If this is any indication I'm going to love the new album "The Terror."
"The Terror" is coming April 16.
