The First Song I Remember Hearing

George Harrison, "I Got My Mind Set On You"
As a kid I LOVED this music video, and it’s so silly to watch today. Van Dale, from Columbus, covers this song, and it’s one of my favorite covers in the world.

The First Album I Bought

The Wallflowers, Bringing Down The Horse
Because Jakob Dylan was such a babe. I was a teenager and just beginning to understand what I liked about boys, and those Jakob Dylan baby blues got me good. I remember being impressed that Bob Dylan was his father, but I knew nothing about Bob Dylan at the time. It wasn’t until later in highschool that I would begin to appreciate his dad’s catalog.

Favorite Movie Soundtrack/Song

13th Floor Elevators, "You’re Gonna Miss Me"
This is the very first song in my favorite movie. I’ve always felt a deep connection to Rob Gordon and the older I get, the more concerning that is, I think. But he introduced me to The 13th Floor Elevators, and for that I am grateful.

The Song That Makes Me Cry

George Jones, "He Stopped Loving Her Today"
"He Stopped Loving Her Today" is hands down the saddest song of all time. I mean, “he” died. He stopped loving her because HE DIED.

Song I Have On Repeat Right Now

Hamilton Leithauser + Rostam, "A 1000 Times"
Rostam (formerly of Vampire Weekend) has been on it this year. He also produced "Water" by Ra Ra Riot, another one of my favorites in 2016. I have a soft spot in my heart for Hamilton Leithauser, who sings in The Walkmen (I mean, "The Rat," an all time favorite song). I’ve really been looking forward to this album, and it’s great.

The Song That Makes Me Instantly Smile

Harry Belafonte, "Jump In The Line"
I suppose this could also be a favorite soundtrack song, because I always think of Beetlejuice. But it’s so joyful and makes me happy everytime I hear it.

The Song That Makes Me Dance

Mark Ronson featuring Bruno Mars, "Uptown Funk"
I’m not known for dancing, but add alcohol and this song may get me to the dance floor. And it reminds me of Morris Day and The Time, so that’s awesome.

Song That Reminds You of Your Teen Years

Phantom Planet, "California"
I must have listened to this song a thousand times when I was 18, when I dreamed of moving to California. I’m happy to call Ohio home today, and I re-discovered this track a year or so ago. Solid early-2000’s song.
