Celebrating the Go-Go's first album

August 3rd, 2020

On a whim last week, I decided to spin my copy of the Go-Go's brilliant 1980 debut album, Beauty and the Beat. I had forgotten just how terrific that album is, and it motivated me to look the band up online, at which point I learned that we were days away from the release of a brand new documentary about the Go-Go's! Though I have not yet had a chance to watch The Go-Go's, I have spun Beauty and the Beat several more times since that day. Though I'm pretty sure every living human knows the album's hits, "We Got the Beat" and "Our Lips Are Sealed," I'm sure there are many people who don't know (or, like I did, had just forgotten) how incredible the other tracks on the album are. I thought that, in celebration of the new Go-Go's documentary, I would highlight some of the album cuts from the first (and, god I hope I'm wrong, but I think still only) album to hit number 1 on the Billboard 200 by an all-female band who played their own instruments, wrote their own songs, and sang their own vocals. Here are several of my favorite deep(-ish) cuts performed by Belinda Carlisle, Charlotte Caffey, Gina Schock, Kathy Valentine, and Jane Wiedlin on Beauty and the Beat:
