Somewhere You Feel Free

October 3rd, 2020

Yesterday marked the anniversary of the death of one of the greatest rock n rollers of all time, Tom Petty.

This morning started out like any other morning.  I woke up to my cat screaming to be fed, I passive aggressively ignored her in an attempt to get some more sleep, she then proceeded to run around my house like a small tornado destroying everything in sight until I was forced to slug out of bed.  After the furry gremlin was fed and I was given permission to go about my day, I made my coffee and then started hanging out with you on air.

I would say it was a pretty normal show: steller tunes, sarcastic comments, and casually contemplating the meaning of the universe between breaks.  Ya know.  Normal Bailey things.

Then it hit me...the meaning of the universe.  It has only taken me 25 years but I finally figured out the meaning of the universe and today I am going to share it with you.

The meaning of the universe is "Wildflowers" by Tom Petty.

We all know that this year has been a weird one and honestly it just keeps getting weirder.  Our entire lives have been flipped upside down, sideways, spun around, and twisted up to the point where it's hard not to constantly feel like you're just one big knot.  The even more complicated part is that despite everything around us, our lives on base level still face their normal struggles.  Hearts are still being broken, work is, and loss is still very real.  Tom Petty's "Wildflowers" reminds us that we don't belong in this kind of chaos, we belong somewhere we feel free.

"Wildflowers" is a pretty simple three chord song that is just played really well and is accompanied by haunting lyrics.  It is one of those songs that really makes you stop for a second to hear what it has to say.  The message is clear: you belong in those small calm moments and that's where you're supposed to be.

Well, life pulls us out of those moments pretty quick and at that point it's pretty easy to feel like you belong to the chaos.  My most sincere hope for you for the rest of this year and beyond is you're able to find your way back to your own field of wildflowers.  Maybe it's a song, a favorite place, time with someone that makes you feel ok, or a furry little gremlin taking a nap in your lap.  I hope that your wildflowers is somewhere you can visit even when your whole world is upside down and you can just breathe easy for a minute or two.  To quote another Tom Petty song, "Wherever you are tonight I wish you the best of everything in the world.  And, honey, I hope you found whatever you were looking for".

That's it: the meaning of the universe is just to feel free every moment that you can.  And 42.  But everyone knows that.
