Tony Hawk's Pro Skater Formed My Music Taste

August 14th, 2020

When I was growing up, I had three musical influences:

There’s this radio station, who introduced me to countless great bands you can still hear on the air today.

There’s my dad, who introduced me to greats like Creed and Hootie and the Blowfish (sorry for the callout, Dad.) (He likes a lot of CD1025 artists too).

Then, there’s the Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater franchise.

The remastered edition released a Demo today, so if you need me this weekend, you know where to find me — camped in front of my TV for 48 hours straight. Here’s some of my favorites that are making a resurgence in the new game:

You know how a song sends you back to a certain place and time? This one takes me back to The Mall. The Dead Kennedys wound up being one of my favorite bands, and I’m lowkey proud to say that’s due to THPS, and not Guitar Hero (nothing wrong with a lil’ “Holiday in Cambodia”, though!)

In my youth, I greatly underestimated how big this band was. What a naive kid. A naive young adult, too, as I was completely floored when I walked downstairs at the radio station for the first time, and took a long look at our walls. Check this out!!!

It’s a platinum record! From Powerman 5000! Sent to the station! Life has a way of coming full circle, I guess.

Critic Robert Christgau described the song as "postminimal rap refracted through Blood Ulmer and On the Corner, as gripping as it is abrasive, and the black militant dialogue-as-diatribe that goes with it is almost as scary as "Stones in My Passway" or "Holiday in the Sun”. [source]

10 year old critic Grayson Kelly described the song as “Yes!!! Bring The Noise!!!”

Possibly the most iconic song from my childhood — the theme to THPS 2. I felt like a complete badass singing along to this one every time the game started up. The new version, true to form, has a remastered intro with the same song!!

A constant throughout my life… I’ll still think of those memories every time I pull it out on the air here at CD1025.

Edited to add: I am NOT messing around here (I know there's some irony that there's no music playing on this one, cut me some slack, it's the demo)
