Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame Inductees...My Two Cents

December 13th, 2018

Well, the wait is over. They announced the RnR  Hall of Fame Class Of 2019. For the first time in a long time, I’m very OK with everyone that got in. If you haven’t seen it yet, but list is The Cure, Radiohead, Def Leppard, Stevie Nicks, Roxy Music, Janet Jackson and The Zombies. If you don't know, in order to get into the Hall of Fame your first recording has to have been released at least 25 years ago.

 Janet Jackson

Janet Jackson…I know, I know…no one ever likes all the artists inducted. There’s always “discussions” on whether or not certain artists should or shouldn’t be in the Rock Hall, but I honestly don’t see anything to argue about this time around. Looking at the list the one stand out that I’m sure most people are complaining about is Janet Ms. Nasty Jackson. I can hear it now…”she’s not rock and roll….she’s R&B….she shouldn’t be in the ROCK AND ROLL Hall of Fame. I call BULLSH*T on that one. Anyone and everyone in that family should be in the Hall of Fame. I’ve never seen her in person, but every performance I’ve seen from her role on “The Jeffersons” to her wardrobe malfunction at The Super Bowl has truly “rocked”.

 def leppard

Def Leppard…Then there is Def Leppard. Sure they are a cheesy hair band that might not have the “street cred” that say Led Zep does, but face facts….they sold A LOT of records and more than likely influenced 1000’s of kids buy a pointy guitar and learn to shred. Not to mention, they were the 2nd rock band to do a rap song, just one year after Aerosmith and RUN DMC. C’mon, think about it…”Pour Some Sugar On Me” is totally a rap song. Next time you hear it…before you turn it off, listen for a bit and you can totally hear LL Cool J doing it. They also won the fan and/orThat and their drummer is single handedly the best drummer in rock.

The Zombies….The only one that kind of threw me is The Zombies, but that didn’t last long. I forgot how many hits they actually have. “Time of the Season”, “She’s Not There”, “Tell He No”, “Going Out Of My Head”…those cats were a hit machine. Just because I didn’t listen to them that much, doesn’t mean they don’t belong.

 stevie nicks

Stevie Nicks…Fun fact about Stevie Nicks...she is the first female to EVER be inducted twice into the Hall of Fame. That’s just crazy talk. How could she be the first? How is Diana Ross not in there twice? Mind officially blown! Again, I’m not a monster fan, but I can’t argue with her deserving to be there. I mean that rumor about how she used to do blow is TOTALLY Rock 'n' Roll!!!

The Cure…I’m still on the fence on whether or not I’m surprised that The Cure got in. I’m VERY happy they are in and I totally think they deserve it, but for some reason I didn’t think they would get in just yet. I mean they have released 13 studio albums, 5 live albums and 11 compilations as well as still being on the road a lot and playing 3+ hour shows. I’ve been listening to them pretty heavily since I bought “Head On The Door” my first day of college in Statesboro, Ga. I also meet the PD of my college station that day and got sucked into the “void of radio”…so they certainly influenced me.

 roxy music

Roxy Music…To be honest, I’ve not spent a lot of time with Roxy Music. I know the songs I know really well, but I know there is a lot of stuff I haven’t heard and probably need to. But the ones I do know are all amazing. “Love Is The Drug”, “Avalon”, “Virginia Plan”, “More Than This”…not a thing wrong with any of those tunes. And any band that has Bryan Ferry and Brian Eno in it automatically should be in the Hall of Fame.

Radiohead…My only beef with Radiohead getting in is the attitude they had towards the Hall last year when they were nominated and didn’t get in. At one point guitarist Ed O’Brien said “I don’t want to be rude about the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame because for a lot of people it means something, but culturally I don’t understand it. I think it might be a quintessential American thing”…OOOOK. For that attitude I kind of that the voting committee might have said “OK Radiohead…as you wish”.

Well they seem to have changed their tune now that they are getting in. Today they made the statement “The members of Radiohead have been surprised to learn of the band’s induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2019. The band thanks the Hall of Fame voting body and extends congratulations to this year’s fellow inductees.”

As for the one that were nominated and didn’t get in, Todd Rundgren and DEVO are the 2 that I personally think should have gotten in and hope they will at some point. The only one that surprised me that didn’t get in is Rage Against The Machine. I figured that would a no brainer. Kraftwork, MC5 and Rufus and Chaka Khan are all hugely influential acts, but really…name 3 MC5 songs.

Well, that’s my two cents on the inductees. I’m sure you have yours well, so feel free to share them on the Facebook @cd1025 and/or @radiomase.
